Chapter 6

When I came downstairs the next morning, I found Val asleep on the floor with a hand outstretched toward the couch. My heart ached for her as I thought of how long she must have sat there, calling out to the cat, only to be spurned for hours.

Then I grabbed a blanket and as I laid it over her, I saw Pancake snuggled up against Val’s back.

I made an involuntary, “Oh!” and woke the cat up. As it yawned and stretched, I froze. Two small green eyes looked up at me, and for a moment we were both statues.

Then it jumped to its feet and sprinted behind the couch, where it returned to its hiding place. It did so quietly, so while I wasn’t happy about my mistake, at least I didn’t wake Val up as well. I threw a blanket over her, brewed some coffee, and sat at our dinner table to read.

When at last I heard her stir, I put my book down and kneeled at Val’s side, brushing the hair out of her face. She took a long breath and scrunched up her face. Then she grabbed her blanket and pulled it up over her eyes.

“Little bastard wouldn’t come out,” she grumbled.

“All you had to do was fall asleep,” I said.

The blanket lowered until only Val’s gorgeous eyes peeked out. “What do you mean by that?”

I grinned and leaned down until I kissed her on the forehead. “Pancake was sleeping right next to you. I, uh, woke him up by accident.”

Val’s eyes squinted at me, and her eyebrows pulled down. “What the heck, Eddie. Did you at least get a picture?”

I shook my head and winced.

“Ugh.”

Val started to stir, so I rose and held out my hand. She accepted the help and stood up slowly. When she was vertical, she pressed her hands against her lower back and groaned. “This must be what it’s like to feel old,” she said as she hobbled toward the kitchen. “Did you make breakfast?”

In lieu of an answer, I stuffed a waffle in her mouth and led Val over to the nearest seat. While she chewed, eyes still closed, I prepared a plate. When it clinked against the table in front of her, Val’s head jerked back and she sucked in a breath. “Oh, right. Thanks.”

“Jeez. Guess you didn’t sleep well.”

“How could you tell?” she grumbled. As she leaned down to meet her waffle-laden fork, some of her hair fell down. It landed in a bit of pooled syrup. She didn’t seem to notice.

“Oh, call it a hunch. Be right back.”

When I returned, I pulled Val’s hair back into a ponytail. I let her finish eating, then I offered, “Want me to carry you up to your bed? I think you’d benefit from a few more hours.”

Val’s eyes remained closed, but her lips curled into a cute smile. “Mmm. Yes, please. Do you think you could stay and cuddle?”

I shook my head as I kneeled down and lifted her. Val felt light in my arms, and all I could smell was maple syrup.
